beds & headboards

~ Here are instructions to make a simple headboard out of birch plywood. Get creative with this one! You can get a taller piece of plywood, and cut the shape of the top and corners any way you want. Find a simple drawing ( kids coloring books are a good place ) and enlarge it to fit your headboard, and cut the shape out of the top.

Here are drawings in the form of PDFs of a princess headboard, prince headboard, shell headboard and butterfly headboard to give you some ideas where you can go with these simple headboard instructions for your bedroom.

The square section at the bottom of each drawing would be the width needed for your bed ( use existing headboard to get this width to be sure ), and the height would be just a little below the mattress top. From there on up you use your custom shape. These drawings are sort of to scale for a twin bed, and using a 4 x 4 sheet of plywood.

I showed the shadow of the original drawing so you could visualize where I started with each one. Some of the spaces could be cut out if you're handy, if not fill in your design with paint. All four of these would look good embellished with a little glitter paint here and there.

You can really kick the bedroom decor up a notch if you also added some embellishment along the top edge of the plywood, such as seashells or rope for the Shell headboard, silk flowers, butterflies or fairies on the Butterfly headboard, Satin trims or faux gems on the Prince and Princess headboards ( feather boa ). As always, consider the age of your child when you are choosing your trim pieces and be sure they are attached securely.

~ Make your kids a car bed. Free pdf of plans, measurements in metric., but I think worth it even for those of us who don't do metric!

~ Circus Room Bed - The kids will love this one!

~ Corner Cabinet Headboard - This is a great idea for a bedroom done in a nautical or seaside theme.

~ 4 Upholstered Headboards - Simple shapes, great for beginners decorating their bedroom.

~ Upholster Your Box Spring - add decorative feet, and never use a bedskirt again in your bedroom!

~ Picket Fence Headboard

~ Boat Bed - Another one for the kids.

~ Bookcase, draperies and cornice combined to make a headboard and canopy effect.

~ Contemporary Headboard - Think craftsman style with a modern twist. Made of wood and fabric. Changing the paint job and the fabric inserts can give this headboard a completely different style.

~ Art Deco Headboard - I'm not so sure I like the fabric choice on this one, but that's easily changed. It gives you the Art Deco style idea. It could be made to look like a sports ball too!

~ Padded Fabric Headboard - Hangs from curtain rod, and has pockets for the remote, magazines and places for photos! It could be hung over a desk or dresser too. It's basically a memo board with pockets.

dressers

~ Faux Leather Finish Dresser - A dresser goes from ugly to awesome!

~ Wallpapered Dresser - the design options are wide open for you depending on your bedroom decor.

This is a headboard I made for a customer from two coordinating fabrics. The frame is made from 2x4s and plywood, and I used polyfoam to pad the striped trim. Note the covered cord stapled in between the print and the padded stripe section.
